Schedule Format

I am a full time graduate student in Education and college writing instructor and spend 161 of the 168 hours of the week with my kids (aside from my weekly hot date with the hubby!). While I am juggling school, work, and "homemaking" (do we still use that term? Or did it die in the fifties?), I am also focused on spending time with my children and encouraging them to LEARN.

I am a firm believer in the fact that most of the education that ALL of us need happens in the home. Although I intend to have my kids enrolled in public school one day, I also feel that it is my responsibility to educate my children at home.

In our house, we have daily lesson plans to teach our children. Since I write these lesson plans for us anyway, I figured I would post it online. I love so many of the preschool websites, but I wanted a site that would provide me with a daily itinerary on what to do each day, that way I didn't have to spend hours trying to piece together "the perfect" daily plan. I haven't found something that really fits that format, so I started doing it myself and figured why not post what I have in case someone else out there is looking for the same thing? So I hope you enjoy! If you have any daily learning activities, please let me know! Also, if you don't get to do these activities every day, don't sweat it. Pick what you can! there have been many occasions when I have had an activity planned but a teething baby, doctor's appointment, or LIFE IN GENERAL keeps it from happening.

Each week you will find the following:

Saturday: Introduction to the Week
Since this is the day we do our shopping, I will provide a list of some materials you will need for the week to carry out the lesson plans. I will also provide a brief overview of the following week.

Sunday: Spiritual Day
Every Sunday we spend some time learning together as a family. Because we are religious, we dedicate about 15 minutes to a small lesson plan centered around some principle in our church. I certainly don't want you to feel alienated at all on this day, I encourage you to think of a core spiritual value that you believe in, and give a brief lesson on that.

So on this day you can expect:
1) Brief lesson on an important value to have. I will post our own, but I encourage you to think of something to explain to your child.
2) Primary Song
3) Movie (this isn't religious, but on Sunday nights we like to curl up and watch a movie together. There's no real education behind it, except our kids learn that we enjoy slowing down and snuggling!). I may also post a little review of the movie and what we learned from it.

Monday: Theme of the Week
Craft
In order to encourage learning in a fun way, each week will have a theme (for example, zoo animals, body parts, etc). There may be a small craft associated with this theme.

Song
Our song for the week will focus on something that goes with this week's theme

Tuesday: Library and Letters
Library Scavenger Hunt
On this day, you will be searching for books focusing on this week's theme. Is your library not open on this day? No worries, just do this activity on a day your library is open.

Letter Activity
We will introduce the letter of the week and do a craft centered around a word that starts with that letter

Wednesday: Story Day
While I encourage daily, random reading on your own, on Wednesdays we will pair a song up with a story. This should be a fun time, so cuddle up in a comfy chair and ENJOY!

Thursday: Craft Day
On this day you will get another craft focused on this week's theme.

Friday: Review Day
On Fridays we do a week in review. We have fun going through our favorite books of the week, review our letter, talk about our theme, etc. Enjoy!

Wing it Activities
I get it, I am a full time graduate student, a teacher, and a stay at home mom, so I get (and assume) that you probably won't get to ALL of the activities in a week. In fact, there are probably days when you just don't have the time for an activity. That's why I have created Wing It Activities for the week. These are just QUICK activities, many of which are ones that your child can do independently while you tackle that stack of dishes in your kitchen! Remember that it's perfectly OK not to do a big, elaborate thing every day. In fact, I encourage you to only do as much as you and your child feel to be fun and exciting. If it becomes a burden, scale it back a bit!

Activity Binder
As a child, I was notorious for forgetting what I learned the week before (heck, I even have that issue now when I show up for class to discuss a text I read a week ago!). So this little binder is a great way to keep the highlights of your week to remember what you have learned together. Just pick one craft or coloring page you liked. If it is a 3-dimensional craft, take a picture of your child with it.
